If you're quite new and have no idea what I'm talking about, just go with using hardware 2.0.
With either hardware 2.0 or vray, I'm assuming you'll bring everything together in comp. Mental ray is too much of a hassle to work with efficiently, unless you know all the ins and outs beforehand. Otherwise, grab vray, it'll let you easily set up passes (depth, velocity, AO in an extraTex), and if you use basic shaders, and traditional cg lights, it'll still render very quickly. This is the kinda hacky way I'd render a simple animation with just one computer, on a limited time budget. You can render depth passes with a sampler info, and hardware AO too. It's the fastest thing you can possibly render with, and you can create some decent materials with the dx11 shader or similar. You could just use hardware 2.0 (your viewport renderer, but you can batch render frames offscreen with it).
